Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 183- Devyn
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
Sorry I didn’t get around to everyone last week. Sunday ended up being unexpectedly busy, and then the surgery pretty well disabled my brain for a few days. Recovery is going well though, and I’m hoping to get the all-clear to go back to normal next week.
On with Sword of Destiny! A few weeks ago, Devyn was tricked into negotiating with Henryk Brun, who pretended he wanted to surrender. In a moment of confusion, Brun managed to capture Devyn and carry him off. Devyn’s wife, Trisa, had been with him at the time and Devyn is hoping she’ll be able to rescue him before too long. He’s on horseback, with his hands tied.
Devyn tried to act resigned even as he stayed alert, his ears tuned toward every rustle of the trees, every snapping branch.
Brun’s forces weren’t so vigilant; they were in high spirits now and amusing themselves by insulting Trisa.
“That duchess of yours looks too scrawny to be much fun,” a sergeant said.
“So foreign-looking, and I’m sure that crazy hair is hiding huge ears,” an officer added, “really ugly, though she’d look better if she were fatter.”
Devyn kept his temper though he felt his ears warm. But then Brun overheard the banter and put a stop to it.
“His Grace has a famous temper,” he said, “we don’t want to unleash it right now.”
“Hah,” Devyn said, certain he’d heard something, which was why he’d only been half listening. Yes, there it was again; the jangle of a harness, the soft scrape of metal.
He took a deep breath and bent low over his horse’s neck as shots rang out from the woods on both sides.

Love how perceptive he is!
Trouble ahead and I love it.
Trouble is always fun!
In spite of his situation, at least he maintains presence of mind. At least enough to duck before bullets start to fly. I just wonder if it’s his enemy, or his friends doing the firing.
I don’t think I have the third book yet, so I just bought the triligy you’re offering. 🙂 Thanks!
He’s starting to mature. Hope you enjoy book three!
I was going to say, might not be a good idea to insult her, but looks like he has other things on his mind. 😀 great snippet.
He knows she’s hot and that they’re just trying to goad him. 🙂
Yeah, smart move. Insult a man’s mate! They’re toast. Nice scene, Christina.
Thank you!
Hold your temper – bide your time. They will pay for those remarks.
Nicely done
He’s learning!
As always, I love your strong female characters. No running off to cry for her, she’s coming to kick ass and take names. Great snippet.
Trisa is thrilled to finally get a chance to rescue him back!
Probably a good thing for him that his captors were preoccupied with insulting his wife in absentia. I’m hoping she teaches them a good lesson when she comes to rescue him! Great snippet…
They got just a little overconfident!
His hypervigilance paid off!
So glad the recovery is going well. Excellent snippet, as always! I’m not sure I’ve ever commented on this before, but I love your covers! The trilogy box is very eye-catching too! 🙂
Thank you! I love my covers too 😀
Ah – I hope his self-control is rewarded.
Ooo that ending! What will happen next?!
Hope you’re recovering well from the surgery. Great snippet – I hope it’s Trisa doing the shooting and she’ll get her own back for the insults.
I’m glad you’re feeling better from your surgery. I hope this is a rescue attempt for Devyn.
I wonder if she can hear the comments, and if it will affect her aim. (Assuming she’s doing the shooting, of course.)
Hope your recovering goes smoothly!
Hooray! A rescue in progress! Now they’ll see the woman they just disparaged in action and trying to kill them all. Payback is such a …Great snippet!
They’re going to pay now! Great snippet.
