Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 181- Carina
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
More from Sword of Destiny, which is still not done. Please don’t ask. 🙂 Though she remains a captive, Carina has continued negotiating with King Arryk. They’ve finally hammered out a document which the council might at least look at.
by“Now we need to get it to the council,” Magnus said, putting the quill down.
“I’ll take it,” Carina ventured.
“Hah,” Arryk said. “You’re not going anywhere.
“I’ll offer my parole of course, and come straight back.” Carina wanted so desperately to be on horseback, to feel the sun on her face, she could taste it.
“No. Even if I trusted your word – which I don’t – the council might still keep you there.”
Carina swallowed down her indignation. “I doubt the council will look kindly on anyone you send.”
Sounds like they still have some things to work out. Great snippet!
Thanks! They are very far from reaching any kind of real agreement.
Suspicion and distrust seem to rule the day — which doesn’t bode well for the agreement they worked out.
Yeah, the whole thing is pretty much dead in the water.
Some negotiations still seem to be in order.
A lot more!
Get over yourself and let her do what’s necessary OR watch out for someone not to be trusted. A major problem!
Getting over himself is something Arryk just can’t do. Which is bad for him.
Seems a bit naive on her part, to expect to be allowed free, even on a pardon. But I certainly understand her desire to be outside! Well done snippet…
Just wanted to add that I appreciate how in your worldbuilding the women are just as influential and key-to-the-politics as the men! And not just behind the scenes either.
Thank you! It’s honestly just wish-fulfillment for me- how things might have been.
I can feel how anxious she is to get out–but it would be tempting not to return!
Very tempting! She’s probably grab onto any excuse.
There seems to be a lot of suspicion still and I can understand why.
I can so understand wanting to be outside again, but of course he can’t let her go. That’s a pipe dream. I wonder if she’ll negotiate a way for her to be able to ride some other way? Nice snippet!
She’s about to get an unexpected break, though she still doesn’t get to go out.
Not sure I’d trust Carina to come back, either. She could make that promise, but until she actually has her freedom, she wouldn’t know if she could keep it.
Exactly!
Seems like there’s a lot of distrust between everyone.
Oh,, how I can relate to her desire to be on horseback – but in her case it’s much more than a love of horses, it’s her one chance for a taste of freedom. I do hope she gets it, though her chances look slim at the moment.
She’ll get it before too long. I really struggle to keep characters I like locked up for very long!
Looking at the responses (above) I think you’ve done a great job letting us feel her desperation to be outside. Great job getting the reader to empathize with her.
Thank you!
