Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 108- Anton
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
I have a release date for Winter of the Wolf: November 18! It’s somewhat tentative, since my husband will have minor surgery at the beginning of the month, but I’m hoping that won’t throw me off track. The blurb is below the snippet.
Last week, Kendryk got into trouble, but Anton has rounded up reinforcements and is coming to the rescue.
Anton prayed they weren’t too late as he put the spurs to his horse. The enemy wanted to take Kendryk alive, but things could go wrong in a fight.
He looked back; now there were a good fifty troops at his back. Raising his saber, he shrieked at the top of his lungs, the way Karil had told him the Marjatyans did.
The enemy soldiers clustered around something on the ground didn’t see him until it was too late. Anton caught the first man across the throat, then pulled his saber free for another. The rest ran off quickly enough after that.
It had grown light, so it was easy to see the body on the ground was Kendryk’s. Anton’s breath caught, but he jumped down and hurried over to him.
“Thank the gods,” Kendryk grinned up at him, “help me get these ropes off.”
Previous snippets are here.
Blurb for Winter of the Wolf:
When all hope is lost, who will raise the banner of light?
War grinds on, spreading its shadow over all the land. In the wake of his overwhelming victory, King Lennart marches on the Empress Teodora, helpless and undefended in her capital. Though battered, Teodora is far from defeated, setting in motion a new plot which threatens to annihilate all of Lennart’s allies.
Unaware of the peril about to overtake him, Kendryk is torn between duty to his family and to his cause. While he struggles to recover from his loss, Anton joins Kendryk in his quest, but will be sent down another, more dangerous path.
Gwynneth has survived an attack by Teodora’s most unrelenting assassin, but she will soon face a test that threatens to destroy her.
Maryna, the heir to Terragand, travels to faraway lands hoping to provoke a confrontation with Teodora, but her journey takes an unexpectedly deadly turn.
Her ambitions magnified at the prospect of her mother’s downfall, Elektra must decide if she’s willing to pay the price needed to fulfill her destiny.
And even as Braeden triumphs over an enemy who has long threatened him, his next steps take him down a path that will lead to tragedy.
Faith and friendship are tested, alliances shattered, and a new generation rises in Winter of the Wolf, book four in the Desolate Empire series.

Well, that fight went well. I hope the rest of the battle goes as smoothly. Great snippet!
It’s time for them to get out of Dodge!
Very visual and with a great surprise. The word “body” doesn’t inspire great confidence of a good result. Well done, Christina!
Everyone had a bad moment, but it was only a moment!
Hope the surgery and release run according to plan, Christina.
Just in time! You had me holding my breath!
Me too! I’m hoping it results in lots of quiet hours sitting around the doctor’s office with my laptop.
Lots of energy, Christina with a happy ending. Super snippet!
Thank you!
At last, an excerpt that ends with a answer instead of a question! Suspense is great and all but sometimes I just wanna know if somebody is still alive 😉
Marcia
It seems worse than it is when it’s spread out over several weeks. 🙂 Though I still want you to worry, at least a little!
Anton rocks! Thank you for relieving us of our suspense from last week. And a release date- yeah!
He’s quite a guy. 🙂
Wow, that’s just bad tactics for those soldiers–you don’t turn your back on everything else just because you have your target down. As Anton just so nicely demonstrated.
Yes, they were easily distracted, and not too bright, fortunately for Kendryk!
An exciting rescue and near miraculous for Kendryk.
Wishing your husband a fast recovery!
Thank you!
Glad he found Kendryk in time. He must have been a fearsome sight if they all ran away after he got one of them. Great snippet.
Anton’s grown to be pretty big. Plus he had a bloodcurdling scream and a sharp blade going on. I’d run too!
Anton to the rescue! Guess his scream helped to scare the bejesus out of them. 🙂
Thank you, thank you, thank you for including that last line!! lol. I’d have worried all week that he didn’t make it!!
You packed a lot in that small snippet, Christina. I thought for sure Kendryk was dead. Nice surprise ending.
Talk about getting there just in time!
I’m praying for your husband’s surgery.
Good old Kendryk, never at a loss! Glad the fight turned out well for him, another great excerpt.
That was a close call. Lots of good imagery here.
Hope the surgery goes well and the recovery is speedy. 🙂 And way to tease us about Kendryk’s outcome! Jeez. Go Anton! Also, I just read the blurb. Way to make me panic ahead of time! And of course I have the release date set on my calendar. Gimme all the feels! 😀
The ARC will be ready on Monday. Bring Kleenex! 🙂
Glad Anton got there in time!!
Good luck with the release and hope your husband’s surgery goes well.
So happy with this snippet! Glad Kendryck is alive and apparently cracking jokes! Great snippet!
Very dynamic and great ending!
Thank you!
