I wasn’t expecting that. Just two days ago, I had a completely solid launch plan for all conceivable ebook platforms. Then the news came that Amazon was changing its Kindle Unlimited payout scheme to favor longer books. In essence, rather than pay a flat rate per “borrow,” Amazon will now pay based on pages read.

Since I don’t expect to hit immediate best-seller status, the possibility of great wads of filthy lucre is less interesting to me than the data that will result from this change. Since pages read will be the standard for payment, that information will be available to authors. The exact form it will take and exactly how it’s calculated remains nebulous (at least to me), but I would lovelovelove to find out how far folks are getting into my book before putting it down. The correct answer–for those of you wondering–is ALL THE WAY TO THE END!! Of course.

With that in mind, I made the rather hasty decision* to go with a Kindle Select release, which means the ebook will be available only on Amazon for three months.  It will be available in print as well, starting June 30.  Once the 90 days are up, I’ll see how I’ve done and decide if I’ll put the book into wider release.

But for now, if you’re a Kindle Unlimited subscriber, you’ll be able to read the book for free, and if you have Kindle Prime, you can borrow it, starting June 30.

*I am both impulsive and decisive, which has caused me to have a very interesting life so far.
