Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 6- Kendryk
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. This week, there are 58! Lots of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
After detouring to Kaleva for the past few weeks, we’re back in Terragand with Kendryk. Julia Maxima- the highest cleric in the land- has just had Father Landrus arrested, and Kendryk has decided to intervene. He and Count Faris-his chief adviser- have just pushed past Julia’s guards, and into her private study. Greylen is Julia’s secretary.
“Prince Kendryk is here to see Her Holiness,” Count Faris said, as the door opened.
Greylen opened and closed his mouth a few times, but no sound came out. He looked like a trout gasping for air, and Kendryk had the sudden urge to laugh. Before he embarrassed himself, he swept off his hat and handed it to Greyeln, then stepped into the room, flinging his cloak back so the secretary had no choice but to take it.
Julia had already risen from behind a gigantic, ornate desk carved in ebony, and Kendryk kept his eyes fixed on hers. “I apologize for bursting in on you, Your Holiness, but  I must speak with you immediately.”
He nodded toward Greylen, who had put Kendryk’s outerwear on a chair, and now stood near the door, wringing his hands. “Alone.”

I have a feeling this is going to be a really interesting conversation **pops popcorn**
Looks like I’ll have to provide a bit of that next week. 😉
A conversation alone? Sounds serious. I wanna know what will go on during that conversation. Great tension build-up in this snippet!
Thanks! You may very well get eight sentences out of the very lengthy conversation that follows next week. 🙂
Great, look forward to it.
Although this is not my typical genre, you have a fabulous voice that kept me reading. I love the way you showed us the shock with the opening and closing mouth and the character’s reaction to it. Great snippet.

Thank you so much! I’ve been so concerned about my voice, so I’m glad it’s working for you!
I’ve only read 8 sentences and I’m hooked. I want to know what’s so important, it sounds serious!
Thank you! It could be life and death, for someone who isn’t there. 🙂
Ooooh, now I’m curious to see how the meeting goes between Julia and Kendryk. I kind of forgot the previous parts, so I’m not sure who is the antagonist, but I could feel the tension between the two of them.
I liked this line, “Greylen opened and closed his mouth a few times, but no sound came out. He looked like a trout gasping for air, and Kendryk had the sudden urge to laugh.” It’s a great description 😀
Looking forward to finding out how the meeting goes!
Thank you! Julia is sort of the antagonist because she arrested Kendryk’s pet preist, but they have a fairly good relationship. I was going to move on to the next chapter next week, but I might have to give you a snip from the very, very long conversation they’re about to have. 🙂
Distract them so they can’t interrupt you–a pretty good plan. Now the question is–did it work?
Tune in next week! 😉
Excellent scene. I like the way he just swept in and handed off his cloak to the secretary. Yes! I hope the meeting goes the way he wants…a very dynamic excerpt!
Thanks so much! He’s pretty used to servants catching his stuff as he throws it off, bu this was quite deliberate. 😉
Love the interactions here. There seems to be an implied power play with the secretary – does Kendryk know from experience that he has to treat Greylen so firmly to keep him in his place?
This isn’t Kendryk’s first confrontation with Julia, and in the past both she and Greylen have been a bit patronizing because of Kendryk’s youth, so he’s laying it on a little thick. 🙂
I love how commanding Kendryk is and how he manipulates the situation in his favour. Great 8.
Thanks! Gotta show them who’s in charge!
Kendryk seems to know his opponents pretty well.
They’ve had a few run-ins in the past!
“Alone.” Loe that last line/word. A zinger. 🙂 Good 8, Christina. 🙂
Thank you!
