Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 133- Trystan
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
Fall of the Titan is live and still on sale through Sunday! Scroll down for details. Since Trystan is having the most fun at this point in the book, I thought I’d give you another snippet of his. After his unsettling conversation with a local priestess, Trystan returns to where he left Natalya, but she’s gone. He’s told she left with some clerical types, so he hurries back to the temple, where the mean priestess has already arrested Natalya and plans to try her for heresy. The priestess wants to grab Trystan too, but he fights his way through the temple guards. Edited from published version.
An unwary guard stood outside, and Trystan bowled him over, then grabbed the halberd he dropped. The other guards were outside now, and Trystan swung the halberd at them in a wide arc. One blundered past him down the stairs and the other ran into Trystan’s blade face-first.
More guards were coming now; he had to get out of here, and fast. He scanned the temple square and spotted his mule, nibbling at grass growing between cobblestones near the stairs. Trystan gathered up his robes and leapt down the stairs, taking them three at a time, still holding the halberd.
The mule startled at his sudden appearance and jumped away, but Trystan already held the reins. The guards were right on his heels, but backed up as he took another swipe with the blade. He took advantage of a moment’s confusion to leap into the saddle and ride across the square at a gallop.
He needed to get to Allaux and tell the king what was happening.
Fall of the Titan is on sale for one more day at $2.99 and then it goes up to its regular price of $5.99. Click on the image to get it at Amazon.

Wow, he’s lucky he escaped. A great action-packed snippet! 🙂
Thank you!
Great action (though ouch! on that face-first bit). He’s lucky he got a fast mule.
The mule is somewhat average. His advantage right now is that no one else is mounted.
You really write action well! The face first…ouch! What a visual. 🙂
Thank you!
Well, this doesn’t look good. Great snippet
Yup- he’s going to need help to get out of this one.
Powerful action scene and I love his mule.
Thank you! I love the mule too. 🙂
Great action! Really lands me in the scene.
Thank you!
I always thought mules were stubborn, and when you wrote he spotted his mule (thinking of a quick getaway) I immediately thought…Oh no. You’re not going anywhere fast with a mule. Color me wrong.
Yes, normally this one is not so cooperative, but he caught him by surprise. 🙂
Wow! Great action.
Thank you!
You have an interesting idea of fun, m’dear. Not sure if Trystan is enjoying himself but I certainly enjoyed reading it.
Well, he’ll look back on this with enjoyment. 🙂
Wow, dramatic indeed. Good thing he’s such a good fighter and thinks fast on his feet. Really enjoyed the snippet!
Thanks! Trystan is a great guy to have around in a tight spot!
He’s quite the swashbuckling fighter!
That’s very much his thing. 🙂
Very dramatic snippet and full of action. Knowing mules, I was a bit dubious of his chances when Trystan leapt onto his, but sometimes mules can surprise one!
He just surprised the mule into sudden action!
It’s fortunate Tristan is so handy with the halberd.
He’s got a knack for anything with a blade.
What a vivid scene, Christina. You had us right in the middle of the action. Great job!
Thank you!
I love the action in this snippet.
Thanks!
Sounds like a close escape! Great action in this snippet! 🙂
Thank you!
Super action scene. I had the same idea about mules–stubborn, usually won’t go when you want them, too, not very fast. Guess I’m wrong.
They’ll move when motivated. 😉
Fantastic action scene! Great imagery.
Thank you!
Almost halfway through and loving it! 😀
Yay!
