Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 119- Anton

This week I’ll continue with an excerpt from my WIP, Fall of the Titans. I reached the halfway point last week! As usual, it’s going to be longer than expected.
Anyway, Anton and Karil, a friend and fellow officer, are escorting Princess Maryna, Kendryk and Gwynneth’s daughter, across a war-torn continent. Anton and Maryna are old friends, but they’re teenagers now, and things have changed.
Anton was sure he would have fallen in love with Maryna if she’d been a regular girl. But she wasn’t and he couldn’t. He spent at least half the day every day telling himself that, and when he forgot, Karil reminded him.
“I don’t know, Captain,” Karil would say when they were alone in the tent they shared, “you looked especially love-struck today. You really need to stop that.”
“Stop making fun.” Anton rolled himself up in his blankets and turned his head away, since it was hard to look Karil in the eye when they discussed this topic.
“Not making fun,” Karil said as he settled into his bedroll, “just telling the truth. You are in so much trouble.”
I am not, Anton told himself, though it was hard to think of anything but Maryna’s face as he fell asleep.

Ah, friends. They’re so helpful. Have to admire the sheer ignorance of thinking you can control who you fall in love with. He’s in for a surprise!

Boy, he’s got it bad for her. So sweet and innocent, I hope it turns out all right for them. You always want things to go well for the young. But so often it doesn’t.
They’ve both been through a lot already, so it’s very tempting to give them a happy ending!
