Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 45- Kendryk

weekend writing warriorsIt’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

Rise of the Storm officially releases on Tuesday! I’d hoped to have the print version ready as well, but because it’s difficult for me to get mail, I’ll have a few days’ delay in getting the proof copy before I can give the final okay. Preorder link is below the snippet.

Last week saw Kendryk leading a mission to free Landrus. They’ve successfully overcome the guards, freed the prisoner and made a quick getaway down a little-known forest trail. Once they know they aren’t in danger of immediate pursuit, Kendryk and Landrus can talk.

After they’d ridden in silence for a time, the moon rising ever higher, Landrus asked, “What comes next?”

“First, we see you safe to Terragand, though I don’t know what happens after that,” Kendryk said, wishing he did.

“Back to the castle?”

“You’re no longer a prisoner, so I’d prefer to have you as my guest at Birkenhof.”

“That is kind. But I have much work to do and don’t know how much time I’ll get to do it.”

“We’ll find a quiet room in the palace for you to work as much as you like, though I’m sure Gwynneth will insist on having you join us for dinner.”

“Did I ever tell you I like your wife very much?”

Kendryk grinned. “Who doesn’t?”

Previous snippets are here.

You can pre-order here.

rise of the stormWhen a renegade priest prophesies an imminent apocalypse, a conflict is sparked which will tip a continent into war.

Prince Kendryk is young, handsome and popular, his kingdom prosperous and peaceful. But in the face of the prophesied apocalypse, he must choose between conscience and power. If he chooses the side of faith, he must defy the ruthless Empress Teodora, ruler of a vast empire, imperiling kingdom and family— but if he chooses the side of power, he risks plunging his world into a darkness worse than war.

The coming conflict will touch the lives of thousands, among them…

Prince Kendryk’s adored wife, Gwynneth, the proud daughter of a king, whose ambition may come at great cost…

Braeden, a violent mercenary, commander of a legendary winged army, who will find himself in the service of an employer he must defy to protect those he holds dear…

And Janna, the merchant’s wife, forced to abandon her home and her way of life, ill-prepared to keep herself and her children safe from the ravages of war…

An epic fantasy saga drawn from real history, Rise of the Storm is Book One in the compelling new Desolate Empire series.

  1. Carrie-Anne says:

l love the matter-of-fact honesty they both have! It’s nice Kendryk took that remark in stride instead of getting upset about it.

  2. daezarkian says:

Great dialogue, Christine, I love it, and congrats on your pending release! =D

  3. Frank Fisher says:

His wife sounds delightful. Nice dialogue exchange, too. I hope this is a success when it comes out.

  4. A tranquil, friendly exchange. Congrats on your new book!

  5. Sarah W says:

Hooray for Tuesday and Kendryk being awesome and Landrus being free! 😀

  6. Sounds just like Landrus, to be freed and only think about getting back to work to help others. Great dialogue, as usual! 😀

  7. Eden says:

So very peaceful (compared to so many other hinted scenes). Glad they are having a moment to rest.

  8. No more battles? This snippet is wonderful with peaceful dialogue and friendship. So Landrus likes his wife? More complications or just a comment?

    • Christina says:

This will set off a lot more battles, but they’re just getting a little break before the empress can take action. The wife will create complications, but they’ll be different from what you might expect. 🙂

  9. Alexis Duran says:

Nice moment between the two of them, but I can’t help but worry about Kendryk taking Landrus back to the castle. He’s inviting the wrath of Theodora, isn’t he?

    • Christina says:

Yes, our dear empress won’t rest until justice is done- or at least what she thinks is justice! Kendryk’s analysis of what might happen next was optimistic in the extreme.

  10. Best wishes on the release! Interesting excerpt, seems like the calm before the storm to me…everything’s just going a little too smoothly, given the state of the world they live in. But I love it, more plot twists ahead no doubt!

  11. It is so not going to be that easy! Something is bound to go wrong…

  12. Happy Release! Love the dialogue and the relationship the two have. But I have a feeling things won’t work out as planned;).

  13. Ed Hoornaert says:

I don’t recall this banner picture (though I can be incredibly unobservant). Even if it isn’t new, let me say that I like it.

  14. calensariel says:

    So you’ll let us know when the paper copy is available? I have a lot of friends I need to show it to so I can say I knew her when!!! {{{Christina}}}

  15. Awe…what a sweet snippet. 🙂 Congrats on the upcoming release!! Make sure you tweet @teresa_cypher about the release so I can retweet it for you! 🙂
