Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 192- Devyn
ItāsĀ time forĀ Weekend Writing Warriors!Ā Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. Thereās a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
I’m going back to work full-time at a real job! Details on that below the snippet. I’m hoping a change of scene will help my writing motivation.
On with Sword of Destiny, Last week Anton was captured, and things aren’t going so well for Devyn either. He decided rather rashly to attack Carina’s estate, and Henryk has ambushed him in a field. Captain Holman is Devyn’s second in command.
āWe need to fall back,ā Devyn shouted when Holman finished firing his pistols into the ditch.
āYes, we do,ā Holman said through gritted teeth, all while reloading faster than anyone Devyn had ever seen. āThough I donāt know how.ā
āCrawl backwards?ā Devyn grinned, even though he felt a little sick. He didnāt want to die like this, facedown in the dirt. Now he wished heād kept some troops in reserve in case something went wrong. There was no one to rescue him.
āErcos help me,ā Devyn muttered. He hadnāt felt this helpless since being captured by the Empress Teodora and imprisoned in a huge fortress.
In the past few months I realized I was getting pretty bored with working part-time from home. In theory I had a lot of time to write, but rarely did. It was great having a quiet year where I got to take care of my health, but now that I’ve done it I’m ready to go back to work. I was hoping for a not-too-stressful office job with nice co-workers and it seems I’ve found that!
I just accepted a position at the University of Oregon, working in administration for the English and Foreign Languages/International Studies departments. I’ll probably start week after next and am very excited, especially because I’ll be next door to the huge library. Guess where I’ll be spending my lunch hours!

Uh oh! Sounds like there’s no way out of this.
Congrats on your new position!
Thank you!
Face down in the dirt — not a good situation at all. I hop the not-too-stressful office job with nice co-workers remains not too stressful.
Always mischief here. Love the story.
Thanks, Charmaine!
That’s what I’m hoping too!
I’ve been reading Shield of Kings this week, so I am oh so not surprised that Devyn would make a rash decision. š Hope he’s able to get out of this one.
And great news on the job! Good luck with it.
Thank you! Devyn still has a lot of maturing to do. He may or may not get there. š
Seems he’s got himself into a bit of a pickle.
BTW – I often find that more writing time does not necessarily translate to more writing. It seems I work best in short bursts under a bit of time pressure.
I agree- I get a lot more done in short periods of time too.
Good snippet, Christina. But your job news eclipsed it–and I can’t even process the Devyn’s dilemma, now.
Wonderful, wonderful! I am so happy for you!! Congrats.
Thank you!
Quite the dire situation you’ve left him in. I hope he survives long enough to get a little smarter.
Congrats on the job. UO is my alma mater.
Awesome! I have a feeling Iām going to enjoy being on campus
Fantastic scene, I love it and hope your character make it out alive for once!
Sounds like a Butch and Sundance moment. I hope it works out for him. You’re supposed to live and learn, so I hope he does just that.
Congratulations on your new job!
Devyn in a ditch and desperate – good scene.
Hope he can get out of this one!
Congrats on the new job, Christina!! Sounds perfect. And your excerpt ain’t shabby, either! The start of a great new year!
Thank you!
Congrats on job. Good snippet. Tweeted.
Sounds like they’re in a tight spot. Congrats on the new job.
Thank you!
I’m so glad you found a job you think you’ll like. You sound so positive. Wonderful!!! Your snippet sounds like a black moment. All is lost. I just know something’s going to change. I hope. LOL
Thank you!
Oh, no! They need a rescue party!
Congrats on your new gig! š
Thank you!
I feel like i’m right there with them and I don’t see a way out for sure! Best wishes on the new job and I enjoyed the snippet…
