Almost Halfway Through Camp NaNoWriMo!
It’s almost halfway through the month, and I’ve done a lot of writing. I’m hovering around the 40,000 word mark, which means I’m about ten thousand words behind on my goal. This month has been a little strange so I’m writing in fits and starts, but at least it’s happening. I have until the 20th to adjust my goal if necessary, but I’m inclined to go for it.
So, how’s Winter of the Wolf shaping up? Pretty well, if I do say so myself. I’ve got all kinds of crazy adventures going on with various characters, as per usual. Things took a slightly strange turn when I realized that the first few chapters actually belonged at the end of Hammer of the Gods. Also, one of my beta readers finished that one and asked, “Where’s the epilogue?” Uh, oops! Fortunately, I had something already written that works quite well.
In order to meet my goal, I have to write 5-6k words at least six days a week. I’ve come along way since my first Camp event when 3k daily really tired me out. In fact, before this one started, 4 thousand daily words were pretty easy to do. But just bumping it up to five is really pushing it for me, stamina-wise. I can write that much, but I need a ton of sleep to make it happen. My appetite also seems bigger, though maybe that’s just a convenient illusion. Surely I don’t NEED daily German chocolate brownies to survive this month!
I must say, I’m not crazy about the randomly assigned cabin. There are a few active people in it, but most haven’t done anything, and it’s not nearly as motivating as hanging out with people who are also working hard. Lesson learned. Come mid-June, I’ll either be rounding up cabin-mates, or inviting myself into one. Definitely worth it!
How’s Camp going for you?

Camp’s going well for me, although I am struggling a bit writing in the present tense, first person! But what is life without a challenge? Next year put a call out on Twitter for like minded people you could share a cabin with. I’m in a MG writers cabin I was invited to rather than taking the chance of a random selection.
Good luck for the next two weeks.
Ooh, present tense would be tough! Usually I find people on twitter well ahead of time, or set up a cabin with a friend. But this year, both the friend and I were sick until a few days before it started, so we were too late. Now I know it’s definitely worth it to plan ahead!
