The Sinus Saga Nears Its End
No Weekend Writing Warriors entry this week. Depending on how I feel tomorrow, I’ll make some rounds, but judging by the way things have been going, it seems unlikely.
The last week has been more challenging than expected. I went in for my sinus surgery Monday morning at 9:30; surgery was supposed to be at ten. A few things went wrong and I didn’t get into the OR until about 4 pm. This wouldn’t have been so terrible except that I hadn’t had food or water since midnight and wasn’t allowed to have any until after surgery. On top of that, the smoke filling the Snake River Valley gave me terrible allergies, and I couldn’t take anything for those either. And those allergies had already kept me up all night. So I was not in a terribly sunny mood. Fortunately, the nurses were very nice and didn’t seem too upset over my occasional bouts of weeping. The surgery itself went off without a hitch.
But enough whining. No wait- I’m just getting started! I had this surgery (laser removal of sinus and nasal polyps) about ten years ago, and have little recollection of the recovery period, mostly because I had appendicitis two days after and that kind of overshadowed everything else. So I thought it would be easy. I pictured myself artfully arranged in bed for a few days, wearing a negligee and good hair while I sipped tea and got caught up on my reading. Ha!
Instead, a grand trifecta of narcotic pain meds, prednisone and antibiotics laid me low. The pain wasn’t so bad because the meds were strong, but made me feel bleh. The other stuff really did a number on me. Endless nausea and no sleep and all of that fun prednisone irritability and anxiety. Good times. One more day. I’ve already cut way back on the pain meds, which is helpful- now I just need to get the rest of my body to realize that everything really is okay and I can eat again someday. My husband has been a trooper and taken really excellent care of me. I feel like I might have died of despair without him.
So, nothing got done. No reading, no writing, and even less thinking. My email backlog is impressive. I apologize to everyone who is owed. I hope I can get to you next week.
At least my sinuses are free of gunk and my asthma is back under control. A new procedure means the polyps might never come back. So once I’m done with meds, I should be raring to go.
Just in time, too. My parents’ 50th anniversary party is in Oregon a week from today. We first of all have to get there (from Tennessee) and then help with a pretty huge bash. Arrangements seem to be under control, thanks to my three mostly-efficient siblings, but I still feel like I’ll need a lot of energy to get through it all. It will be fun, I’m sure, especially once I feel like myself again.
Hopefully I’ll check in later in the week and things will be looking up.

You have my sympathy, Christina. I had antral nasal window surgery years ago, though it seems easier than yours is!
Thanks! Maybe it was tougher this time because they prescribed at lot more side-effect-inducing meds, or maybe it’s just because I’m ten years older.
I hope you feel better soon!
Oh girl, why didn’t you let me know about the surgery? We were up that way Saturday and Sunday (Snake River Valley) and my eyes burned and watered the whole weekend. We have crappy air here because of the fires (California, Oregon, Washington, and idaho) but nothing like it was up there. So I can imagine how your allergies were. So sorry to hear about how unpleasant it all was. Hope you’re up and running quickly so you can get to the anniversary. God bless Ben! So you guys are on your way to Tennessee now??? (Will be praying for you, sweetie!)
Can’t believe I missed you! Though I wasn’t very good company those days leading up to the surgery- it was definitely overdue. Hopefully the smoke is gone for good now, or at least until next year.
Christina, not to bombard you with comments, especially as you recover, but I’ve tagged you in a 3 days, 3 quotes challenge. Basically, you post a quote from a favorite book for 3 days and tag a person each day. Obviously there’s no rush to do it (and you don’t have to if you don’t want to)! Here’s one of my posts, if you’re interested: http://fluenthistorian.com/2015/08/24/the-book-quote-challenge-day-3/
Thanks, I’ll check it out! I sent you an email a few days ago. 🙂
I saw said email and keep forgetting to reply to it! 😉
Poor Christina, I am sorry it was so grim. Sending my best get-well fairies until you are 100% again. Sending love and wellness.
Aw, thank you! I’m finally completely recovered and feeling better than I have in a long time. It helps to be able to breathe! 🙂
