Musical Inspiration: Two Steps from Hell
I know I’ve said in the past that I normally don’t listen to music while I write. Well, that’s no longer strictly true. Thanks to one of my Writing Challenge buddies, I heard about these guys, and now wallow in endless hours of epic, sound-tracky music while writing.
Two Steps from Hell is not a band. They are actually a music production company made up of two guys- Thomas J. Bergersen and Nick Phoenix-and they’ve created music for loads of soundtracks and video games. So, if some of the music sounds familiar, you’ve probably heard it somewhere already. They also create pre-recorded electronic software thingies (I swear that’s the technical term!) used by other composers, like my brother. (Check out Ron and Kelly music.)
Best of all, you can listen to all of their stuff for free on Spotify, and YouTube. l. I have to confess to breaking down a couple times and buying the Invincible and Skyworld albums, so I don’t go through withdrawal when I don’t have internet.
If I’m feeling low on energy, all I need is to listen to a few tracks and I’m writing like a maniac. My husband has also found it helpful when he has to drive and is starting to feel sleepy. So no, it’s not good music to fall to sleep to.
To get you started, here are some of my favorites, though there are plenty others I love as well. It’s actually hard to pick just a few.

I listened to a few of their YouTube videos a few months ago when you suggested them. They are pretty fantastic.
They have a new album coming out in a few days. I hope it goes straight to Spotify!
Thanks for the recommendation! I will check these guys out this afternoon. 🙂
Cool! I’ll have to check them out. Right now, I mainly write to classical music. It works out great, except when I get tired of it occasionally, LOL.
Yeah, I can listen to Bach while writing- keyboard/harpsichord only- but I’m not always in the mood. I tried writing to Mozart the other day, but I kept stopping so I could fully enjoy the beautiful melodies.
Yeah, same thing happens to me. I start focusing on the music and neglect the writing, LOL!
