One more snippet from Shield of Kings. Devyn has asked his old friend, Trisa Torresia to join the king’s army. Devyn has had a crush on her forever, but they haven’t seen each other for a few years while she fought elsewhere as a mercenary. He’s just picked her up from a smuggler’s boat.
Devyn grinned down at her while she smiled back, her merry dark eyes same as always under the shock of dark curls. Her teeth were very white in the dark.
“Goodness, Your Grace,” she said. “Haven’t you turned out handsome? And so huge. What a target you’ll make in battle.”
Devyn blushed, wondering if she’d changed her mind about him, but then she went on. “I had my doubts about your looks, especially that time you had the pimple. You know, the really big one—”
“Oh shut up,” Devyn said, pulling her into his arms, lifting her off the dock. Nothing had changed it seemed, and for now, that was good enough.
