Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 169- Devyn

It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

Missed you guys last week, but my oldest niece graduated from high school, and hordes of family descended upon Eugene. It was a lovely time, though it makes me feel really, really old.

Today I’m continuing with Shield of Kings, which has been out for a few weeks. I probably won’t share a whole lot more from it since I’m deep into writing the sequel already.

Devyn and Anton are talking to King Arryk about his lack of soldiers to put down the rebellion. As it turns out, Anton is now super-rich. (I like to reward my favorite characters. Or kill them.)

“I’ll write to my agent in Zeelund asking him to hire a recruiter,” Anton said. “It might take some time, since there’s still fighting in Floradias, but I’m sure he can put together an army of at least several thousand professionals.”

King Arryk somehow managed to look both relieved and unhappy. “I can’t afford that many troops,” he said. “The rebels hold my treasury in Arenberg and my overseas investments are depleted.”

“I’ll pay for it,” Anton said, in such a kind fashion Devyn didn’t see how the king could refuse, “I’m happy to.”

“I can’t accept charity—” the king began.

“I’ll make you a loan. Aren’t kings always taking out loans?” Anton offered his lopsided grin and that settled the matter.

  1. At least if Anton is rich, he’s not stingy about it. The mark of a good king or a fool-hardy one? Or does he expect something other than loan payments in return?Great snippet. Anton is smooth!

    • To Anton, money is only as good as the influence it buys. So that’s what he’s after. Also, he’s just a nice guy and has a good history with the king.

  2. I’m with Amy on that one – make them super rich or kill them! I’m glad you didn’t kill Anton though, he sounds very genuine, and generous – and he knows how to make an offer difficult to refuse, a good diplomatic gift to have!

  3. Anton isn’t afraid to use his wealth. I like the way he tries to help the king save face by offering a loan.

I know what you mean about feeling old. My great-niece just graduated college!

    • He’s more interested in the influence and prestige money can buy than the money itself. And he’s on very friendly terms with the king. Congratulations to your great-niece!

  4. Good Snippet! I don’t know, old friend shows up in my time of need willing to give me the exact amount of money I need to succeed as ‘a favour’. Nothing good can come from this. Can’t wait to read more!

  5. Glad you crossed over with the same characters. I was growing fond of them! Btw, I now have your WHOLE set! I have to finish reading the last two. 😀
