Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 122- Trystan
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
This week I’ll introduce a completely new POV character. The young Duke Trystan Martinek, already played an increasingly important role in Winter of the Wolf. In Fall of the Titans, he gets his own story. WINTER OF THE WOLF SPOILERS AHEAD:
Trystan and Anton rescued Princess Maryna and Natalya, the highest cleric in Galladium, from the clutches of Teodora’s allies. While Anton returns Maryna to her family, Trystan is escorting Natalya back to Galladium. Even though she’s quite a bit older than he is, Trystan is infatuated with her, but can’t get her to take him seriously. Â They’ve just learned they might soon run into an enemy army. Creatively punctuated.
When they made camp that night, Natalya seemed in the mood to talk, coming to sit next to Trystan by the fire. He preferred to be alone with her, but it was better than nothing.
“I already know you’re brave and skilled,” she murmured softly enough so no one else sitting around could hear.
Trystan was glad for the darkness hiding his blush. He shrugged, hoping he sounded nonchalant, “Lucky too, I think.”
“Perhaps a combination,” Natalya said, fixing her beautiful eyes on him until he had to look back, “but I don’t want you putting yourself at any further risk for me. Once we cross into Galladium, just get me to the nearest temple and I can make my way back to Allaux with their help.”
“I’m sorry,” Trystan said, though he really wasn’t, “I just can’t do that. I know the temple will help you, but you’ll still have to travel across a war-torn area; you shouldn’t do it without a military escort.”
My boxed set goes live on Tuesday! This week only, get the first three books in the series for only $4.99. Click here to pre-order.

Gawd, you can paint a scene with words! Vivid, Christina! Great snippet!
Isn’t he a wee bit young for her? Or do I not have a good handle on their ages?
Yes, she’s about 32, and he just turned 20. 😀
Is this her way of squelching the ardor of a man too young for her?
She’s definitely trying to discourage him.
He sounds like an honorable man, or could he have other motivations for sticking with her.
I just finished Valley of the Shadow the other day. That ending made me want to snatch the next book right up.
Aside from being crazy about her, he also sees her as a vehicle for his ambition, so his motives aren’t completely pure.
I couldn’t resist adding just a tiny cliffhanger at the end of Valley. Sorry! 😀
Stick to your guns, kid. You’ll grow up fast enough! Nice scene, Christina.
Thank you!
Attraction is such an uncontrollable emotion. I wish him well. Wonderfully vivid scene.
Thank you!
It’s a good thing is duty coincides with his personal reasons for wanting to stick by her. 😉 Great snippet!
It helps that he made sure it did. Thank you!
He’s determined to be a hero for the woman with whom he is infatuated. I assume she’s trying to manage his expectations, and letting him down gently.
She’s trying, though not succeeding very well. 🙂
Natalya seems to be a very kind, concerned woman.
She seems to want to be rid of him!
So duty and personal reasons combine here. It’ll be interesting to see which is stronger.
Yes! Trystan is a great character. 😀
He’s not *that* young. And maybe he’ll be helpful…
He’s been super helpful so far. 🙂
I expect he will be her companion for some time to come!
He’s going to drag this out as long as he can!
