Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 113- Sonya
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
The Forsaken Crown comes out in just a few days, so I’ll share another snippet from it. While Kendryk is fighting it out in the council chamber, the other main character, Sonya, is having a run-in with a group of raiders on the eastern frontier. Zeki is Sonya’s horse. Edited from the published version.
Sonya drove straight for the nearest raider, a woman with a dark leathery face under a shaggy hat.
The woman held two curved blades, guiding her pony like she knew her business.
Sonya grinned. She knew her business just as well, and met the woman’s steel with her own as they crashed together.
The pony backed up, then danced sideways.
Zeki turned straight into them, and Sonya’s sword came down onto the woman’s shoulder. These sorts seldom wore armor of any kind, and this woman was no exception. Sonya’s blade bit into her, and the woman screamed.
Sonya drove her sword straight down, dragging the woman to the ground, and the pony ran off without a second glance.
Sonya pulled her blade free of the body and looked for her next target.
Sonya, an ambitious mercenary intent on commanding her own army, vowed nothing would stand in her way. But then she ran afoul of the most powerful woman in the empire. Humiliated and condemned, she must now struggle to survive.
Kendryk has a vast kingdom to rule, though he isn’t old enough to do it on his own. But when he learns his regent, Duke Desmond, wants to seize the throne, the stakes turn deadly. With no one he can turn to, young Kendryk is forced to rely on an outsider.
Now their destinies have intertwined and the fate of the kingdom is at stake. Can Sonya and Kendryk overcome their pasts and mistrust to find a path to victory? Or will the forces arrayed against them triumph?

Ouch. I’m rehabbing a torn rotater cuff, so I felt this blow personally.
Hope your recovery is going well. Just refrain from raiding Hungarian villages and you should be fine. 🙂
Brutal. I love it!
One raider down. Great description! 🙂
Thank you!
Wonderful. You kept the battle short and sweet!!!
Ed, I had two rotator cuff surgery operations. Painful and six month recuperation. YIKES!!
No mercy, but that’s correct for the middle of a battle.
Whew – glad the pony got away. Love the intensity of the last line.
Tweeted.
Yes, I try to make the horses survive if at all possible, though I know it’s not realistic.
I like the way you write such strong women and vivid fight scenes. Great excerpt!
Thank you! They’re both so much fun for me to write.
I really felt like I was in the thick of the battle. Very well-written, Christina! Best of luck with the release! 🙂
Thank you!
Wooo! Go Sonya! Absolutely loving her in the book! <3 #girlcrush
Oh good- I love her too!
She totally knew her business a little bit better than that woman it seems.
Fortunately, as it turns out. Well actually, unfortunately. But that’s for a later snippet. 🙂
I love a girl that can kick butt. Nothing like it.
Me too. Obviously. 🙂
Wow! Fierce woman. You described the fight perfectly. Great snippet.
Thank you! She’s a terror on the battlefield.
EW, bloody and horrific, a perfect battle scene!
I tried not to be too gross, but this scene was pretty borderline.
Yikes! Graphic and evocative…nice imagery here in this scene. So visceral.
Thank you!
Sonya’s certainly not a delicate little flower, is she?
Wow. What a battle!
Intense fight scene. Well done.
Great action sequence.
Solid, no-nonsense action! I like!
Now that’s a warrior. Didn’t matter that it was a woman, Sonya did know her business very well. Great snippet!
Looks like going without armor was not a good decision! That was brutal, but effective. Nicely done!
Well done. Great action scene, brutal, intense.
I always admire your action scenes, Christina. Excellent dynamics.
