Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 96- Anton

weekend writing warriorsIt’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

From Hammer of the Gods: Last week, Anton was getting ready to ride straight into cannon-fire with Count Orland. So they did, and it didn’t go well. Here’s the immediate aftermath. Skandar is Anton’s horse. Slightly edited from the published version.

Skandar walked down the road, refusing to move faster. Anton applied his spurs, but Skandar still wouldn’t hurry. Was he hurt? Anton looked down and saw blood on Skandar’s leg, but couldn’t tell how serious the wound was. At that moment, Anton realized blood covered him too. It drenched his armor, his clothes, and the rest of Skandar. He stopped, even though he didn’t think he was hurt, but he needed to check on his horse.

Anton dismounted clumsily, even while something in his brain clanged at him, shouting that he needed to keep moving and not stop here. But he wouldn’t go on until he knew Skandar was all right. All the same, he was unprepared for the blow when it came, and slumped to the ground as his vision turned to black.

Tune in next week to find out who conked Anton on the head!

  1. Uh-oh! That’s not good at all. I’m anxious for next week to find out who did that. Great snippet! 🙂

    • Yes, my whole mission throughout the book was to make Anton miserable. 🙂 It gets better in the next book, since I hate torturing characters indefinitely.

  2. Things are not going well for either him or his horse. Great snippet, and look forward to finding out who has hit him.

(Btw, there are some thought vibes going through the air. I was reading your piece as your e-mail ‘pinged’ into my Inbox, just as it did with one other writer. Perhaps our brains are becoming synchronised?)

  3. I like that he checked on his horse first and foremost – but oh dear, at what price? Looking forward to finding out what happens next – and who (or what) hit him!

  4. Somehow I doubt this would have gone well even if he hadn’t stopped… but he definitely made it easier to take him down. Still, an injured horse is a bad thing.

    • Yeah, they were in that bad position already because they couldn’t get away, so Anton didn’t have a lot of options. And he’s very attached to his horse!
