While Braeden and Elektra plot against her, Teodora is having other problems. In order to extort more money from the defeated King Arryk, she’s thrown her hostage, Arryk’sย (and Gwynneth’s) little brother Aksel into the Arnfels dungeon. To her surprise, her youngest daughter Zofya, comes to plead for his release, professing her love for him (she’s about fourteen). Teodora wonders how Zofya and Aksel got to know each other, since she never has any idea what her kids are up to. Somewhat edited and horrendously punctuated.

โ€œMother Hela, my scientific instructor, says Iโ€™m particularly good at experimentation, and Aksel is of course a brilliant scientist,” Zofya said.. “Iโ€™ve spent hours in the school laboratory with him, and weโ€™ve invented aโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve what?โ€ Teodora nearly came out of her chair. โ€œYouโ€™ve been spending time alone with Aksel Roussay?โ€

Zofya had the good sense to look mildly alarmed, then said, โ€œMother Hela and the other students are always there, but Aksel and I have become good friends; he says Iโ€™m nearly as clever as his sister, and everyone knows sheโ€™sโ€”โ€

โ€œStop that,โ€ Teodora snapped. โ€œYou cannot trust him, and you will never see him again, even if that means I have to keep him in the Arnfels for the rest of his life.”

Zofyaโ€™s lip trembled as she said, โ€œBut you must let him go, Mother; weโ€™ve nearly finished a device which couldโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care about your stupid device,โ€ Teodora screamed, unwilling to believe this was happening..

  1. Oh my gosh! Not a fan of Teodora with that excerpt. I want to know what they’ve built. Intriguing excerpt! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. One can only hope that the device is something fantastic that Teodora will never get her hands on because she’s mean and has a big mouth. Love this. ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. I’m with Elizabethโ€“ย Teodora needs an attitude adjustment ASAP! You’d think she’d have gotten one after the events of the last book, but… *sighs* I really do loathe her. By which I mean, wow, you wrote an amazing villainess. ๐Ÿ˜‰
