Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 88-Braeden
Itβs time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. Thereβs a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
Lots going on this week. Hammer of the Gods launched on the first, and is available for 99 cents for one more day. Details below. It’s also time to start thinking about Camp NaNoWriMo in July. A friend and I have started a cabin and we still have space. Let me know in the comments if you’d like an invite. I’m also participating in a huge multi-author promo (along with a few other 8Sunday writers!) Details for that, also below.
Braeden is having an interesting time, as usual. A few weeks ago, we saw he’d kidnapped Teodora’s daughter, Elektra, and was planning to murder her. But thanks to some fast talking by Elektra, an uncooperative henchman (Karil), and Braeden’s somewhat soft heart, plans have changed. It turns out Elektra hates Teodora as much as Braeden does, and they decide to plot her murder together with Brynhild Mattila, Teodora’s top general and archnemesis.
Braeden wondered if he had eaten bad cheese, fallen asleep, and was having a strange dream. But it seemed he really was making plans to assassinate Teodora with her own daughter. He sat around the fire with Karil and Elektra, discussing the best way to broach the subject with Brynhild Mattila.
They have a history,β Elektra said. βI donβt know exactly what it is, but it seems long ago Mattila did something terrible to Mother and perhaps to her dreadful friend, that Daciana Tomescu.β She shuddered.
Braeden at least approved of that view of Tomescu. In fact, he was looking at the little archduchess in a different light. Now she no longer cowered in Mattilaβs shadow, she seemed far more confident and energetic. She also seemed a religious fanatic, but Braeden didnβt mind that too much, as long as it didnβt get in the way of his plans.

I’ve gotta wonder where this “new light” that he views her in might lead.
It won’t lead anywhere good for either one of them. π
I think it is so interesting that he’d planned to kill her, and now he’s plotting with her to end another. Nice tease! π
Yes, ultimately it’s Teodora he wants to get, so he’s hoping this will be an easier way to do it.
From victim to co-conspirator. She was quite persuasive!
Yes, she’s convinced she had some divine assistance with the fast thinking!
Nice how the tables turn in this snippet. I hope this new friendship bodes well. Good snippet! Thanks for the invite, but I’ll be going home for all of July.
Thank you! It’s .going to turn sour pretty fast, but that’s all part of the fun. π Hope you have a great time at home
Your snippets are always so chock full of intrigue! Great stuff, Christina!
Thanks, Steven! I recently complained to a beta reader that I was suffering from “intrigue fatigue.” π
I really enjoyed that scene. Not only is Elektra full of surprises, Braeden’s not a cardboard character either–his heart is good though he has a bit of a dark side which makes him very relatable.
Thank you! I had such fun writing Elektra’s story, and I love Braeden very much. π
It shows, and that’s a good thing. I think you’re attached to Anton too but really, who wouldn’t be?
Oh yes, I adore Anton, and I’m pretty transparent about it. π
Yay! Braeden! I really liked this part of the story, and agree with the above comment for sure. π
I did enjoy writing this highly dysfunctional relationship!
Good fast talking by Elektra. Now they are plotting Teodora’s murder. It all seems very intriguing. It must make your brain spin, keeping in touch with your characters’ minds. Good writing.
I think I spend much of my time in a state of partial (?) insanity, muttering to myself. π
I like this twist to the plot! Braeden and Elektra are both intriguing characters and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for them.
Thanks! I had so much fun with both their storylines in this book.
I’m glad to hear you love Braeden – gives me hope he’ll survive this book!
It’s likely he will. Maybe. Possibly. π
Oh how things change! Now they’re plotting together and he’s finding himself attracted to her…can’t wait to see where this goes next! Great excerpt.
It’s going to go badly, is all I can say. π
Excellent twists and turns in your plot, Christina. The religious fanaticism, I suspect, is going to play out interestingly!
Thanks! Yes, Elektra’s religious commitment is going to be very important to her story.
Wonderful things happens with any reversal in a story. This one is epic and I can’t wait to see how this partnership plays out. π
Thank you! I’ve had a lot of fun writing it.
You have a complex set of interactions here.
Interesting. I can see this going one of two ways… Hopefully, it doesn’t end badly.
It’ll all go sideways pretty quickly, but that’s all part of the fun. π
That’s different. From being a victim to a conspiracy.
It’s all about the plan… but that kind of narrow focus can lead to problems! And I bet his will, because it’s more fun that way. π
Oh yes, it’s about to go all kinds of wrong, which is definitely the most fun. π
Love how his agenda has changed. Can’t wait to find out more.
LOL! You gotta watch out for that bad cheese. Things are about to go from interesting to ACK!
Congrats on the new release. π
Thank you! π
I bet it’s interesting where you show this: “Now she no longer cowered in Mattilaβs shadow, she seemed far more confident and energetic.”
I love character bravery transformations!
She’ll backslide a few times, but she’s well on her way!
