Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 77- Gwynneth
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
Gwynneth has finally been liberated from the besieged castle by Arryk and his ally, Arian Orland. Back in Rise of the Storm, Gwynneth and Arian had an affair, which caused all kinds of grief. They haven’t seen each other since Kendryk sent him packing. Gwynneth is about eight months pregnant and Arian’s first words when he sees her are:
“I need to know,” he said. “Is it mine?”
Such an unexpected question nearly sent her into hysterical laughter. She pushed it down. Whatever had passed between them, he had helped free her now and didn’t deserve to be insulted. “It’s not,” she said softly, shaking her head. “I’m sure of it.”
“Oh.” He seemed disappointed.
“It’s for the best, I think.”
I don’t know why Gwynneth is so sure *rollseyes* but all shall be revealed at some point in Hammer of the Gods, which is done! (ish) My first reader has pronounced it adequate, so it will go to beta readers as soon as I’ve had a chance to read it over and make sure it’s not complete nonsense.
Previous snippets are here.

Congrats on that milestone, Christina.
Interesting dynamics in this piece, nicely done!
Thank you!
Ohh, a bun in the oven and more than one man claiming to be the baker, eh? That’ll lead to some great conflict! Congrats on finishing-ish the next book!
Haha! Yes, the bun is quite a troublemaker, both before and after birth.
Inquiring minds want to know: is it his?
All shall be revealed in book three- which takes a place a few years after this one. 🙂
Congrats on finishing your story! I’m intrigued that he is so disappointed in learning it’s not his child. But, is it?
Thanks! He’ll take any opportunity to spend more time with Gwynneth, but she won’t make it easy for him. 🙂
Demand the test! Delightful and so true, Christina.
Haha, if they had tests back then, she’d be in trouble!
The amount of story and emotion you convey in your dialogue is always astounding, Christina! Nice work!
Thank you, Steven!
Being pronounced adequate is good 😀 If you need another beta, I’m happy to help! Wonderful snippet!
Aw, thanks! I’m full up on betas right now, but I’ll definitely let you know if/when there’s an opening. I can’t seem to handle more than five or so at a time. 🙂 Nice to see you again!
Oh! That’s what SHE said. But is it true? Nice tease, Christina!
Yeah, Gwyyneth knows the “right” answer, and she’s sticking to it!
A very thoughtful answer!
Oh, why is that almost always the first question! That wasn’t a question. It brings up a lot of questions for me, however. Great snippet, I look forward to next week.
He’s surprised she’s pregnant, but looking for an in, so he’ll take it!
I’m interested in knowing how she’s so sure. Of course I don’t know the time line and she might be sure, still…life is full of surprises. She may not know what she thinks she knows. LOL Great snippet!
She’s not sure at all, just in denial 🙂
Congrats on being done (ish).
I’m happy he’s disappointing – leaves lots of room for intriguing things to happen.

Thanks! Yeah, he’s a player who’s fallen for the woman he can’t have. More drama ahead!
I can’t help wondering if she only told him it isn’t his because she assumes it is what he would want to hear, or maybe to protect him from something? Great snippet. It leaves me wanting to read more. 🙂
Thanks! She’s really over him, so doesn’t want to give him an excuse to stick around. And she’s in a bit of denial herself.
Hm…is that a spot of wishful thinking I see? And how cute that he seems disappointed. Nice snippet. 🙂
They’re both somewhat delusional, but in completely different directions. 😊
I bet it belongs to him.
There’s a 50 percent chance your guess is right! 😉
Hmmm – what’s this all about – she’s doesn’t want to insult him so she tells him the baby’s not his. Curious. 🙂

She wanted to laugh in his face at the very idea, which would have been at least somewhat insulting. 😀
Congrats on finishing!
This is a very interesting snippet. I’m very curious why he would think it’s his.
Thank you! He’s doing the math on the pregnancy, which does coincide with the end of their affair. But she got back together with her husband shortly thereafter, so there’s potential for mystery. And drama, of course. 😀
Well of course he’d want the answer to that question! I’m with you, wondering why shes so sure it’s not his but I guess we’ll see. Excellent excerpt – a lot happened in such a short set of sentences.
She has absolutely no basis to be sure, but certainty is convenient for her right now.
DNA test, please. lol I’m curious to know if it really is his.
It sounds like you know a little more about this than Gwynneth does. Ha! Our silly characters… lol
She knows as much as I do, but she’s in denial. A luxury the author can’t afford. 😀
Rare to find someone who’s disappointed the baby’s not his…fun little snippet, and plenty of suggestions to the rest of the story in these few sentences. Good stuff.
Thanks! Right now, he’ll take any in he can get with this woman- even a baby! 😀
I gather the baby is, indeed, his? This is the kind of lie that will cause all sorts of problems later.
Well, with all her man problems, I suppose the baby is *hers* and that’s all there is to it.
That’s the right way to look at it. Problem solved! 😀
She’s laughing it off in her mind BUT what if…and there is always that what if isn’t there? Nice job with that your really leaving us guessing is it nor or is it really? Even though she said no you did a great job of planting that little seed of doubt in my mind.
Aww, he’s disappointed, he hoped she would say it was his. I wonder if it really is?
I’d like to know how she’s so sure as well. Great snippet.
I love how she just knows, a way to make sure she’s seen the error of her ways and has no doubts. 🙂
His disappointment makes me like him immediately. Congrats on finishing the next book!
Thank you! This character turned out a lot more likable than I’d planned. 😀
Thank you!
