Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 63- Janna

weekend writing warriorsIt’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

This will be the last snippet from Rise of the Storm. I’m on track to publish Valley of the Shadow in January and am nearly 50k into Hammer of the Gods, so it’s time to move on. I’m excited!

I really hated destroying a happy couple like I did Kendryk and Gwynneth, so I decided to create another simultaneously.

After a few months of cautiously becoming good friends, Janna and Braeden have all but acknowledged that they’re in love with each other. But Janna’s still a bit scared and Braeden’s taking it slow. He takes her along with him as he helps spearhead Teodora’s invasion of Kendryk’s lands and one chilly evening they get cozy by the campfire. Braeden tells her about his childhood; his family was killed by raiders and he was sold into slavery, where he met his best friend and current employer Prince Novitny. Janna gets a bit weepy:

Braeden kept stroking her hair, then wiped her eyes with the corner of the blanket.

When she could speak again, she said, “It’s too dreadful. You would have been younger than my Anton, and oh gods, he saw all of that too. But you survived and did all right.”

“I did, so there’s no need to cry over it now. It was almost thirty years ago and I never think about it. Your boy will be all right too.”

Janna loved him for his calm assumption that Anton lived, and in that moment she knew her heart was safe. The past still haunted her, but more than anyone, Braeden had helped her realize that her life wasn’t over and she might be happy again. She moved closer, wrapping her arm around his waist and resting her cheek on his chest, feeling his solid bulk protecting her from everything bad.

  1. I always loved the romance between Janna and Braeden. They’re so good for each other and they have fantastic chemistry. If something bad ever happens to them, I will genuinely cry. Given what they’ve been through, they could use tender, gentle moments like this. 🙂

  2. So happy Janna gets to come in out of the cold (at least for a while) and it’s great to see the softer side of Braeden. You did a wonderful job of letting this relationship develop naturally.

  3. Awwww! How sweet! I must admit, if we’re talking about breaking up happy couples….I’m not particularly fond of writing couples that are overly happy anyway. LOL….But some fluff now and again keeps the faith in love alive. Thanks for sharing (as usual, you crazy talented woman you)!
