Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 57- Janna

weekend writing warriorsIt’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

After Braeden rescues Janna in the woods, he’s ordered to return to Teodora since she’s finally received reinforcements and is ready to take back her besieged capital. When Janna hears about this, she’s very worried, since she’s still a wanted rebel. She finally decides to tell Braeden,  who’s become a semi-awkward friend/acquaintance. They take a moonlit walk around camp and she starts by expressing her concern that she’ll be so near the empress. Braeden says:

“You keep going on about that. It’s as though you think she has a personal interest in doing you harm. I’m sure she does not.”

“But she does,” Janna said, then explained about Dimir and the proclamation. As terrified as she was about how he might react, it was a relief to tell him.

Braeden stopped short. There was a half moon, but it was bright, and she saw his face clearly. At first he wore a puzzled expression, then burst out laughing.

She took a few steps back, not sure what to make of this.

He stopped laughing when he saw her face and said, “I believe you, but you are the unlikeliest rebel I’ve ever seen.”

Dimir was Janna’s first husband and was executed for being a rebel at the beginning of this story. The empress wanted all the rebel’s families rounded up as well, which is how Janna ended up on a wanted poster.

Edited to add: I just got a really nice 5-star review of Rise of the Storm from blogger Kate M. Colby!

“With a full cast of characters, political intrigue, romance and a dash of violence, it has everything sword-wielding fantasy lovers crave. . . .”

  1. LOL! Congrats on the review, by the way.

I love awkward friendships between characters. To me that often keeps the personal side of a story particularly interesting. Anxious to see more of this scene.
