Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 56-Kendryk

weekend writing warriorsIt’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

A lot has happened since we last checked in with Kendryk. While Gwynneth and Arian Orland pressure him to take on Teodora while she’s in a weak position, he procrastinates with religious concerns. He’s learned from his pet excommunicated priest that his whole country has turned to the new form of worship. The only holdout is Julia Maxima-Kendryk tangled with her long ago, at the start of this whole thing. Now he has to fire her. He and Arian Orland barge into her study. We’ve met her secretary, Count Greylen, before. (creatively edited)

“You’re sure you want to do this alone?” Arian asked.

Kendryk nodded, then opened the study door without knocking.

Count Greylen jumped to his feet saying, “You can’t come in here.”

“Out,” Kendryk said, holding the door open.

Arian took one step inside, his hand on the hilt of his sword and Greylen scurried past him.

Kendryk let the door fall shut behind him and turned back to Julia. She stood, but stayed behind her desk.

“I’m sorry to be unpleasant,” Kendryk said.

Well, at least he’s polite. Aside from his somewhat threatening buddy.

Previous snippets are here.

For those of you who’ve read Rise of the Storm, or don’t mind having the ending spoiled, I’ve just released the first three chapters of the sequel- Valley of the Shadow. You can read them here.

  1. That’s a cliffhanger ending even without the threat of somebody getting killed! Or maybe that is there?? Hope you pick up from here next week!

  2. I love how Kendryk apologizes even as he’s kicking her out of office. I’m afraid to read the first three chapters you posted – much nail biting over a certain someone’s fate.

    • I’m not quite sure how to ease your bitten nails except to say, if someone gets a pov, I plan to keep them alive through at least most of the book. I am no George R.R. Martin. Mostly 🙂

  3. Nice of him to start with an apology but he’s going to have get a lot more unpleasant, from what I gathered from the summary! I do like Kendryk. Quite the situation going on here, excellent snippet.
