Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 55- Janna
It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
When we last left Janna, she had lost herself in the woods, avoiding all human contact. But Braeden happens to be marauding in the area, and stumbles upon her. Janna is starving and scared, but he persuades her to come back to his camp with him and arranges transport with Kazmir, his battle charger.
With one swift movement, he picked her up and set her in the saddle. She squeaked and held on for dear life. The horse looked at her sideways, but held still. It looked like it was a mile down to the ground.
The blue eyes twinkled up at her again. “No need to be afraid of Kazmir. He only pretends to be fierce. He’s gentle as a lamb and loves ladies.”
Janna doubted she qualified as a lady at this point, but was too frightened to protest. Still, it was a nice change to be afraid of a horse instead of its rider.

Yay! I love Janna! 🙂
Me too! We can have a Janna fan-club of two. Maybe three. I think my sister might join. She can relate, too. 🙂
I love the line about being afraid of the horse rather than the rider.
I do love Braeden!
Poor Janna, and I agree with Ed, that is a brilliant line.
Thanks! It’s probably not very cool to be a fan of one’s own character, but I’m still a Braeden fan. 🙂
Terrific excerpt, Christina, and I’m going to jump on the bandwagon, that last line is awesome!
Thanks, Steven!
LOL I love how the horse looks at her sideways. Hold on, Janna!:)
I’ve had horses do that to me, and I’m all “What?” and then OMG hold on! 🙂
I think you’re having a lot of fun writing this! Despite Janna’s predicament, I’m having fun reading 🙂
Thanks! Yes, I was mostly enjoying myself while writing this.
Mmm, God love a man who can pick up a lady in one swift motion and set her in a saddle. 😀 Great excerpt, Christina!
Me too!;-)
A well-crafted snippet! I agree that it’s sometimes better to fear a horse than its rider. You sure wouldn’t want to be standing right behind a horse!
Thanks! Janna has learned to be afraid of everyone, so the fact that Braeden doesn’t make her run is a good sign. It helps that his horse is well-trained. 🙂
I like Janna’s instincts.
Well written and of course I’m loving the horse/rider line.
Oh that horse…looking all sideways at her. Hopefully his ears weren’t flattened down when he did that : ) Love it!
He’s not mad, just a little impatient. 😀
I’m sure a battle charger can be scary!
Aw…I think I just melted a little at the description of Kazmir! Great snippet. 🙂
He’s a great guy- I mean horse! 😀
Great snippet from start to end. The last line sums it nicely. 🙂
I really liked today’s snippet, had a lovely flow to it beginning to end!
Thank you!
I love that last sentence! Makes me wonder what she’s gone though in the past.
I put her through the wringer in the first half of the book. Being the token refugee character sucks! 😀
Intriguing exchange.
My only comment would be about Kazmir looking at her sideways when she’s in the saddle. I think he’d struggle to turn far enough to see her. Maybe have him stomp his hoof or snort when she squeaks. Just a thought;).
I dunno, I’ve had horses kinda look at me out of the corner of their eye when I was fumbling a mount. Or maybe I was just insecure and convinced they were rolling their eyes at me. 😀
I love the horse side-eyeing her, wondering what’s going on. Sometimes horses seem to be doubting the wisdom of their riders.
Yeah, most horses I’ve ridden acted somewhat contemptuous of my talent- or lack thereof. 😀
I’ve been side-eyed many times. And run away with once, too….
I don’t sense that from Kazmir, though.
This snippet reminded me of a story I wrote for Story a Day May this year…Trip, T’Pol, and a horse….it’s still pretty rough, but I thought you might like it!
