Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 46- Janna

weekend writing warriorsIt’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

My book is out and I’ve even sold a few copies. Link is below the snippet.  I got the proof copy a few days ago and it looks awesome, so print will be available next week sometime. All I need now are some reviews, so if you’re reading, please say a few words about it on Amazon and/or Goodreads.

Last we checked in with Janna and Anton, they’d been kicked off the farm they were living at and decided to go back to the tavern where Maya had helped them before. They have no food or water and it’s very hot. So they rest during the day and travel at night. The problem with this plan is that people who are up to no good are also out at night. Janna and Anton see a group of soldiers, but can’t get away before the soldiers see them too. They’ve been lucky once before, but not this time.

A man jumped off a large horse, strode to where Janna stood in the brush and grabbed her by the arm. “Someone get the boy,” he said, as he yanked her toward the road.

Another man picked Anton up and carried him toward the horses. Anton struggled, but he was too small. The man just laughed and threw him on the ground, then held him there, a boot planted on his back.

“Please let him go. He’s just a little boy.” To her surprise, her voice didn’t shake. Perhaps she’d gotten stronger. Still, not strong enough for this.

Previous snippets are here.

You can order Rise of the Storm here.

rise of the stormWhen a renegade priest prophesies an imminent apocalypse, a conflict is sparked which will tip a continent into war.

Prince Kendryk is young, handsome and popular, his kingdom prosperous and peaceful. But in the face of the prophesied apocalypse, he must choose between conscience and power. If he chooses the side of faith, he must defy the ruthless Empress Teodora, ruler of a vast empire, imperiling kingdom and family— but if he chooses the side of power, he risks plunging his world into a darkness worse than war.

The coming conflict will touch the lives of thousands, among them…

Prince Kendryk’s adored wife, Gwynneth, the proud daughter of a king, whose ambition may come at great cost…

Braeden, a violent mercenary, commander of a legendary winged army, who will find himself in the service of an employer he must defy to protect those he holds dear…

And Janna, the merchant’s wife, forced to abandon her home and her way of life, ill-prepared to keep herself and her children safe from the ravages of war…

An epic fantasy saga drawn from real history, Rise of the Storm is Book One in the compelling new Desolate Empire series.

  1. Congratulations Christina! So very exciting!

The eternal fate of woman and child- commodities to be stolen and sold.
The briefness highlight the awfulness of the act. Nicely done.

  2. Poor Anton! :'( But yay for your release! Hopefully you earn a lot more sales and droves of reviews. What I’ve read so far is fantastic, so I’m sure you’ll have great success. Is your book available on Kobo? I’m interested in picking it up and would give it a full review on my blog. 🙂

    • Aw, thanks! I’m just on Amazon right now, but I’d be happy to send you a review copy in epub format- that’s what Kobo uses, right? Let me know!

  3. Congratulations on the book! Enjoyed the excerpt, very tense and leaves me quite worried about your characters…which is a good thing, of course. Well done!

  4. I am truly frightened for both of them!

Congrats on the release! The cover is gorgeous. I just bought it on Amazon. I have a lot of books on my Kindle, and I’m currently reading 4 at one time. Not sure how quickly I’ll get to RotS. I am good for the review, though, once I read it.

    • Thanks so much! I’m glad I’m not the only one who reads multiple books at a time. I think I “only” have six going right now, and am behind on reviews. There’s no rush. 🙂

  5. Oh man, what a scary scene. I don’t doubt that she’s grown stronger, but this might be her ultimate test. Best of luck on the new release! 🙂

  6. Nice, what a beautiful defining moment. I like how you describe her surprise with her growth. She is definitely getting stronger, He’ll have to take her seriously. Congrats on your new book also! I’m so happy for you!!!
