Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 43- Braeden

weekend writing warriorsIt’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

I just finished the final edit of this book! Now it’s off to a final proofread, and if all goes well, I’ll be able to publish by month-end, as planned. I can’t quite believe I’m done with this thing! Blurb and cover are below, just in case any of you haven’t seen them yet. πŸ™‚ Can you tell I’m excited?

While Kendryk and Gwynneth plot how they might help Landrus, Braeden is trying to make sure they don’t succeed. Teodora has just heard that her capital is besieged and is preparing to rush back with Landrus in tow. She’s sent Braeden to make sure the prisoner is well-guarded. Braeden is Β talking to Count Solteszy, Teodora’s chief adviser.

β€œOver there,” SolteszyΒ pointed to a heavy wagon with a barred window on the other side of the stableyard.

Braeden rodeΒ over to it and jumped down when he got there. β€œPrisoner inside?” he asked an officer who might have been in charge.

β€œAye, sir; we’re waiting on further orders.”

β€œI have them. Her Highness wants twenty guards detailed to the prisoner and twenty to herΒ children.”

β€œIs that all?”

β€œI reckonΒ she wants the rest at the walls of Atlona as soon as possible.”

“Does she realize it won’t be enough?”

Braeden shrugged. β€œNot my problem- or yours.”.

Poor Braeden doesn’t seem to realize that ALL of Teodora’s problems are also his, sooner or later.

Previous snippets are here.

rise of the storm

When a renegade priest prophesies an imminent apocalypse, a conflict is sparked which will tip a continent into war.Β

Prince Kendryk is young, handsome and popular, his kingdom prosperous and peaceful. But in the face of the prophesied apocalypse, he must choose between conscience and power. If he chooses the side of the faith, he must defy the ruthless Empress Teodora, ruler of a vast empire, imperiling kingdom and familyβ€” but if he chooses the side of power, he risks plunging his world into a darkness worse than war.

The coming conflict will touch the lives of thousands, among them…

Prince Kendryk’s adored wife, Gwynneth, the proud daughter of a king, whose ambition may come at great cost…

Braeden, a violent mercenary, commander of a legendary winged army, who will find himself in the service of an employer he must defy to protect those he holds dear…

And Janna, the merchant’s wife, forced to abandon her home and her way of life, ill-prepared to keep herself and her children safe from the ravages of war…

An epic fantasy saga drawn from real history, Rise of the Storm is Book One in the compelling new Desolate Empire series, sure to propel Christina Ochs to the top of your fantasy reading list this summer

  1. Congratulations, Christina! So very exciting! You must let us know where we can but a copy.

Braeden seems to be tempting fate. I am sure he will rue his words soon enough.

  2. We’ll get to read the whole thing soon? Woot!

I wonder if Braeden will ever decide to switch sides–and what that final straw might be? πŸ™‚

  3. Congrats on finishing another round of edits. It’s always a good feeling, isn’t it. I love your snippet, but I do have to request that you limit your snippets to 10 or less sentences. By my count, you’ve posted 11. Thanks for participating and I look forward to reading more of excellent snippets.

    • Thanks, Jess! I tweaked it back to 10 sentences. I’m surprised there weren’t more. I was so brain-dead when I posted, I carefully counted out 12 sentences. ☺️ It seemed like a nice round number at the time!

  4. Congratulations Christina! The blurb is fantastic, the cover is gorgeous, and if your snippets are anything to go by, the story and writing will be stellar. This is great news! Celebrate! πŸ˜€

  5. Congratulations on the progress with the book itself! Exciting…I worry about Braeden because he just doesn’t seem to get the entire picture and where he fits in. But therein lies the tale, right? Enjoyed the excerpt, gave me things to ponder…
