Weekend Writing Warriors: Snippet 18- Kendryk

wewriwaIt’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-sentence snippets from their WIPs on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.

Sooo, last week, I kind of left Janna in a bad place. So sorry. I’d planned to continue her story today, but it’s just too dang depressing to post this close to Christmas. So, we’ll return to Kendryk and I’ll bore you with theology instead. 🙂  He’s been poring over the Holy Scrolls with Father Landrus, and so far, isn’t finding the answers he’d hoped for. :

Kendryk’s eyes burned, but he deciphered the ancient letters one more time, just to be sure. “The Scrolls do mention a ruler who will defend the truth,” he said, finally looking up, “but the only description they give is that he will be young and from the north, That could be me, but it could also be King Lennart of Estenor, or Gwynneth’s brother Arryk, or even Prince Ossian.”

“None of them have stepped forward in defense of the truth as you have,” Landrus said. “That is all the proof I require.”

“So let’s suppose I am that ruler.; the Scrolls say nothing further except that he is to be present at the final battle. Does that mean I have no choice except to fight the Empress?” And that was it right there- Kendryk’s worst nightmare.

Previous snippets are here.

I’m not sure if I’ll be here next week. I’ll be with family for a few days after Christmas, so I might be busy, or not, depending on niece and nephew quantities present on any given day. 🙂 I wish all of you happy, safe and blessed holidays!.

  1. That’s the crux of it–fighting the Empress. Several ways this could go!

I have no post this week. 🙂

Thanks for holiday wishes. I hope your Christmas is Merry, and if we don’t see you, I hope your New Year is happy, blessed, and safe. 🙂

  2. I hope Kendryk doesn’t have to fight the Empress. I wouldn’t want to have to fight someone of such high authority. Great work using the Scrolls to create tension between your characters. Happy Holidays to you!

  3. I’m with Alexis, it’s interesting that he believes the scrolls decide his destiny. Now he has to decide if he is willing to accept what he has learned. Strong and compelling snippet.
    Merry Christmas!

  4. For Kendryk’s sake, I hope that’s someone else’s destiny and his is in a different scroll. Sound scary. But then, heroes do have to face their fears so if this is his worst nightmare, it’s probably going to happen.

    • Yeah, Kendryk is pretty reluctant to risk the pleasant life that’s been handed to him. Saving the world is a nice idea, but it becomes less appealing when you might have to put something real on the line.

  5. Isn’t that how prophecies go? Maddening hints, but nothing clear cut. Something about too much information changing outcomes, I think. I bet the prophets are just lazy… 😉

  6. You drew me right into the story with so few words. Well done! I’m intrigued to know more about the prophecies.

  7. You know, this whole thing about religion, following a path, destiny, whatever you want to call it gives a whole different slant to the book than I imagined at the first. I’m really anticipating reading the whole thing.

    • That part of it evolved as I read more about the causes of the war. Though there were political considerations, it seems that Frederick V really thought he was being called to defend the Protestant faith, and the waters were further muddied by his interest in some apocalyptic prophesies. Parts of this story practically write themselves! 🙂
